Avoiding tick box engagement in WA’s infrastructure boom
Our team has carried out community and stakeholder engagement programs for high-profile urban renewal and major project developments across Australia, including on key Perth infrastructure projects Tonkin Gap, Matagarup Bridge, and the Charles Street Bus Bridge and Busway.
Cannings Purple holds membership with the International Association for Public Participation Australasia (IAP2) and our approach to community engagement is guided by its internationally endorsed Quality Assurance Standard. The majority of our Stakeholder Engagement team members have undertaken training delivered by IAP2 in Australia. We have experience preparing stakeholder and community relations strategies to ISCA standards.
The Cannings Purple and Main Roads team was recognised at the 2019 IAP2 Australasia Core Value Awards and highly commended for our leading-practice community and stakeholder engagement for Matagarup Bridge, which included closing the Swan River to all vessels for more than two months and coordinating a dynamic testing program with 1500 members of the public.
Our approach to engaging for infrastructure uses both the reactive and process-driven functions necessary for good-quality project stakeholder engagement. But we also use a detailed program of proactive profiling opportunities which strengthen relationships and build a positive project profile. We helped the project team at Main Roads to deliver a bank of opportunities to assist the WA Government to regularly demonstrate project benefits and successful delivery milestones.
