Former journalist and now Vasse MLA Libby Mettam is four years into her career in WA Parliament – and she’s already experienced plenty.

Since succeeding former Liberal leader Troy Buswell in the seat of Vasse, she’s been in and then out of government and taken on the role of Shadow Minister for Tourism and Small Business, tackling key issues such as the delays in the Busselton-Margaret River Airport project.

She opened up to Cannings Purple’s Peter Klinger on life as one of four women currently in Parliament for the WA Liberals, plus the juggling act between city and country.

Unfiltered, unguarded and sometimes unconventional, The Bench shows WA’s politicians as you’ve never seen them before.

Small business’ big battle

Libby Mettam on the heavy cost burdens and red tape stopping some WA businesses being globally competitive.

Ready for takeoff – just grounded!

The stalled project to upgrade Busselton Margaret River Airport to handle interstate flights remains a source of frustration for Libby Mettam.

More women needed, but not quotas

Libby Mettam would dearly love to see more female Liberal MPs but only if they are chosen on their own merits.

On the road again

With 100,000 km on her car’s odometer over the past 18 months, Libby Mettam balances parliamentary commitments in the city with family time and community responsibilities in her electorate. She opens up on life in and out of government.

Town and country

Libby Mettam believes Perth people want to look after their country cousins – but rails against what she views as a “metrocentric” government approach.

Starting out

Brought up to work hard, Libby Mettam says an appreciation for the challenges of running a business and living in the country have helped equip her for a political career.

Taking over from Troy

Libby Mettam’s predecessor in Vasse was one-time Liberal leader Troy Buswell.
