Director, Stakeholder Engagement
Simon has more than 20 years’ experience in stakeholder engagement and a proven track record in solving complex challenges by finding the win-win for companies and their communities.
Prior to joining Cannings Purple, Simon was Head of Community and Indigenous Affairs – Australia for BHP.
His career in mining has included senior roles for BHP, Atlas Iron and CITIC Pacific Mining where he has been responsible for a variety of stakeholder engagement challenges including responsibility for community engagement, government relations, corporate communications and regulatory approvals. He has led stakeholder engagement and approvals requirements for complex infrastructure projects including mines, road, rail and pipeline projects.
Simon began his career as a political advisor and campaign manager for State and Federal MPs, culminating as Chief of Staff for the portfolios of Resources and State Development, Local Government and Regional Development. This experience positions Simon to advise clients on the most expeditious routes through a range of government and bureaucratic approvals and tender processes.
His qualifications include a BA in Political Science and a Graduate Diploma in Primary Education. He is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and is proud to chair the board of Kalparrin, which supports more than 4,500 Western Australian families raising children with disability and additional needs.
Simon is married to Karen and has two amazing children. He enjoys cooking up a storm, as well as hiking and exploring WA and beyond.
